Some homes are so steeped in memories that you don\u2019t want to leave them, even when the stairs start to become a physical obstacle.<\/p>\n

For a house on Wetterwille in Drachten, we worked with the residents to explore how the existing qualities could be preserved whilst preparing the home for a new phase of life.<\/p>\n\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n\n \n \n \n <\/picture>\n\n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n

Set on a green plot in the \u2018Papegaaienbuurt\u2019 neighbourhood, the conversion represents a subtle yet powerful intervention in the existing structure. By extending the storage room and incorporating it into the living room, a complete living space has been created on the ground floor. This makes the property suitable for all stages of life, with a new bedroom and bathroom that blend seamlessly into the overall design.<\/p>\n\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n\n \n \n \n <\/picture>\n\n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n

The extension follows the characteristic form of the existing building, but features modern and sustainable materials. A bio-based approach has been adopted, with a wall structure comprising, amongst other things, timber frame construction and a finish of weathering Red Cedar.<\/p>\n

A nice detail is the blue-stained window frame<\/strong>, finished to match the seating. This is a nod to the historic colour accents in the immediate surroundings.<\/p>\n\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n\n \n \n \n <\/picture>\n\n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n

The transformation not only provides functional space, but also enhances the living experience. The new kitchen-diner and the bedroom offer direct views of the garden, whilst a sheltered, covered seating area marks the transition between indoors and outdoors.<\/p>\n

The transformation of the house on Wetterwille is thus an example of how a personal home can be transformed into a sustainable and future-proof home whilst respecting its history.<\/p>\n\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n\n \n \n \n <\/picture>\n\n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n
