Bootenhuysch Gyas

Gyas is the largest student rowing club in the Netherlands, where social life, mutual connection, and elite sports at the highest level come together. With the celebration of two Olympic champions in 2024, the club has proven its status as a breeding ground for talent. However, to facilitate this continuous growth and ambition, the ‘Bootenhuysch’ has literally outgrown its capacity.

The current location seemed too confined for expansion without negatively impacting existing infrastructure, nature, and local residents. Furthermore, the current building no longer meets modern standards and requirements, and there is no alternative waterfront location available for the club.

In close collaboration with the club and other stakeholders, we designed a bold expansion that not only enlarges the existing building but completely transforms it. The result is a distinctive and transparent building that embodies the dynamic spirit of rowing, while perfectly fitting both the club and its surroundings.

The expansion manifests as a high-quality new floor placed on top of the existing building. This level provides ample space for club life and social activities, offering a panoramic view over the rowing course. A grand entrance staircase and an inviting gallery form the new connection between the waterfront quay and the clubhouse.

By smartly separating the functions, significantly more space has been created on the ground floor for the boat fleet. With the celebration of two Olympic champions in 2024, the club had already proven its status as a breeding ground for talent.

The renewed ‘Bootenhuysch’ is now fully prepared for the future: an open and light-filled building deeply connected to the water, ready for contemporary student life and the next generation of champions.
