Helmond Brainport Smart District
In Helmond, they work on an innovative residential neighbourhood: Brainport Smart District (BSD). The latest insights and technologies in the areas of participation, health, data, mobility, energy, and circularity are being applied here to create a sustainable and attractive living environment.
The first temporary homes in Brainport Smart District were designed by vector-i in collaboration with mHome and Felixx. Fifty-two modular apartments have been built in the district. The stacked homes are surrounded by ample space for shared greenery and a bioswale. The modules are owned by mHome and will remain in the area for 15 years. The homes are carefully integrated into the landscape, creating a high-quality appearance combined with a beautiful shared garden.
The residential modules are made primarily from circular, ecological building materials. Moreover, the modules are easily reusable and repositionable, a higher level of circularity. This makes these residential modules a perfect fit with our circularity ambitions.
In Helmond, we also focused on the participation of future residents. We not only built a home but also worked with residents to create the future living environment. mHome aims to foster a community, for example, by working with residents to shape the shared (outdoor) spaces.
The residential modules in BSD Helmond are an example of the construction industry’s response to several societal challenges, such as housing shortages, social isolation, harmful emissions, and material shortages. Industrializing housing construction in the Netherlands is a key pillar for creating good, comfortable, and affordable housing for everyone.
