An Ode to the Past
Where a family’s story once began, now stands “Villa Vijf”; a contemporary woodland home that subtly alludes to its predecessor. Not a literal copy, but an abstract ode to the family home, translated into a modernist design with a patio as its tranquil heart.
Thus, the villa recaptures the intimate atmosphere of the former forest house, while simultaneously embracing the openness and transparency of a modern glass villa. Situated on a natural elevation, “Villa Vijf” blends seamlessly into its wooded surroundings. The house interacts with nature in several ways: it embraces it with transparent facades that offer expansive views, it burrows into the slope for a sheltered atmosphere, it floats above the ground with spacious terraces, and it nestles among the trees like an organic element.
With this design, we explore the possibilities of the rustic retreat in Dutch nature and culture, reinterpreting the classic typology for the 21st century. Sleek lines and large glass surfaces create a sense of space and freedom, while the echo of the original dwelling provides shelter and intimacy in the patio. Throughout the house, rooms are bathed in natural light. Fully transparent facades, framed by elegant overhangs, replace walls and draw the forest inwards. The boundary between inside and outside blurs, creating a serene and harmonious living environment.
