At a beautiful villa, a difference in level of almost three metres created an unintended psychological barrier between the terrace and the lower-lying garden. Our brief was to bridge this gap and bring the garden to life as an integral part of the enjoyment of the home.
The solution is a strategically positioned pool house, constructed largely from timber. The design is elegant and clean: a sculptural, laminated roof rests on two enclosed volumes. The distinctive timber beam framing the roof gives the building its unique character. On top, a roof covered in flowers and plants gives space back to nature and provides a habitat for bees, butterflies and other insects. Between the volumes, an intimate living space is created, sheltered by two spacious sliding doors.
When these are fully opened, the boundary between inside and outside becomes blurred. This effect is enhanced by the fact that the wooden roof structure appears to continue visually from the outside to the inside. The pavilion is thus transformed into a covered terrace and becomes fully integrated into the garden, allowing the residents to finally experience the outdoor space to the full.
